Most strollers offer a bassinet or lie-flat mode which is ideal for your newborn. These strollers can interchange on the chassis to accommodate a bassinet, carrycot or cocoon to make your child more comfortable and secure with a firm, flat surface. Other models, commonly travel strollers, feature seat units only making them suitable for little ones who have some neck control or can sit unsupported, which usually happens around 6 months old.
Generally, a pram has a fixed parent-facing carrycot and is designed for newborns to lie flat up to around six months old. For this reason, prams don't offer much versatility or longevity. Pushchairs are adaptable and can accommodate newborns and older infants, providing a complete solution that can be used for a long time. A stroller, also known as a buggy, is simply a type of pushchair. The term tends to refer to the more lightweight and compact frames designed for travel. Strollers offer convenience for parents living in urban areas, and they're great for families who spend the majority of time outdoors but need something that's easy to fold for transport and compact enough to store. Strollers are ideal for little ones over the age of 6 months. Some compact models can hold children up to 22kg.
Pushchairs come in several main types, including standard lightweight as well as all-terrain options. Lightweight strollers are ideal for public transport and travel, while compact strollers are easy to fold. All-terrain pushchairs are built for parks or rural areas, with good suspension and larger wheels to ensure a smooth ride on uneven terrain. You can also find double prams, which are designed for twins or siblings of different ages. Travel strollers often include features like extendable sun visors or retractable canopies for sun protection. Some also offer features like useful shopping baskets or adjustable handlebars, which are helpful for two parents with different heights using the stroller.
The best stroller for you and your family will be completely unique to you and your child. Key considerations include lifestyle, budget and longevity. There's been a recent surge in interest in lightweight strollers, which provide an easy option for everyday use with older babies and toddlers who've outgrown their pushchair or carrycot. These were once a secondary purchase following a newborn pushchair. However, there are now a lot of fantastic lightweight models that can be used from birth. Most strollers do not weigh more than 7kg with the seat attached, and they typically fold small for ease of storage, whether it be in your home, the boot of your car, or on public transportation. You should measure your car boot and front door width before buying a pushchair to ensure the correct fit.
Travel systems consist of a frame that can interchange attachments to suit your child's age. The attachments usually include a seat unit, carrycot or bassinet and car seat, as well as adapters. This offers advantages over a standard stroller, like the option to leave your little one asleep in their car seat or carrycot when on the move without having to disturb them. Many of our travel systems come with added accessories like footmuffs, seat liners, baby carriers, changing bags and rain covers, though you should always check if these are included with the pushchair.
Not every infant car seat fits on every pushchair, so you'll need to make sure your car seat is compatible with your pushchair and visa versa. Sometimes, you may need car seat adapters. If you intend to use a car seat with your pushchair, always check compatibility first or buy a ready-made travel system for convenience.
It may be a good idea to test both parent-facing and forward-facing seats to see which option you prefer. Parent-facing can help you develop a bond as they can see you and you can see them, but forward-facing lets your child see the world around them and can keep them entertained on your stroll. Luckily, most pushchairs have reversable seats so you can try both with ease.
All prams and pushchairs should have a safety label to show that they comply with the relevant British Standards of safety requirements and test methods for wheeled child conveyances (BS EN 1888: 2012 or BS EN 1888: 2003). Every pushchair we stock meets these standards. For your child's safety, check pushchair weight capacity before use and be sure to follow the care instructions for your individual model. Ensure that you clean pushchair wheels regularly to prevent damage, store your pushchair in a dry place to prevent rust, wipe covers with warm water to clean stains and inspect your pushchair for loose parts regularly for safety.
The market is extremely varied and there are options for every budget, but prices generally range from around £300 to over £1,500. When shopping, you'll need to consider your lifestyle and what your family needs to find the perfect pushchair for you.
You should swap from a lie-flat pushchair at around 6 months old, or when your baby can sit up unaided, when they're able to control their head/neck movements and when they can fit comfortably within the seat unit 5-point safety harness. Until then, newborns should lie completely flat for proper spine and hip development.
Many of our compact travel pushchairs can be used as cabin luggage on board a plane to help you fly with ease, but make sure to check with your airline before your flight. Travel pushchairs—including our selection of cabin-approved pushchairs—will fit in airplane cabin compartments. If you don’t have a cabin-sized stroller, you can also use your pram until you board the aircraft and check it at the gate. Just make sure to tag it when checking in.
