Infant Car Seats
Your little one should stay in their infant car seat from when they are newborn until they are at least 15 months old or weigh around 13kg. When they are older than 15 months and weigh over 13kg, it's time to transition to the next group and size car seat. When you are buying your infant car seat, check the size and fit section to make sure it's the right option for your baby
When can an infant move to a forward-facing infant car seat? Rear-facing travel is recommended for as long as possible, as babies are five times safer in a rear-facing infant car seat than a forward-facing one. Your infant should rear-face until they are at least four years old, but some brands suggest that children should rear-face up to the age of seven. Your baby should use an infant car seat from the day they are born up until they are around 15 months old. When your child is older than 15 months you will need to move from an infant car seat to a baby car seat that is suitable up to four years old. Your baby will outgrow their infant car seat when they are around 15 months old or 13kg. Car seats are catagorised into Groups 0,1, 2 and 3. Here's a detailed breakdown of the different groups and the age and weight limits within them:
- Group 0+ - Rear facing car seats suitable for children who weight 0kg-13kg or are newborn to 15 months
- Group 1: Rear facing car seats suitable for children who weigh 9kg-18kg or are newborn to four years old
- Group 2: Rear or forward-facing car seats suitable for children who weigh 15kg-25kg or nine months to six years old
- Group 3: Rear of forward-facing high-backed car seats suitable for children who weigh 22kg-36kg or four years to 12 years
When your baby is an infant, we recommend you limit car journeys to just 30 minutes at a time. It's important to make sure your little one is comfortable and they will need to get used to their infant car seat. When your baby is a little older at around three months, you can go on longer journeys, but your baby should still never be in their car seat for longer than two hours at a time.
