Halo has launched a new partnership with the Lullaby Trust, which will help the Lullaby Trust to provide free safer sleep advice and support bereaved parents. This partnership with Halo will allow the Lullaby Trust to reach more families with Halo's key safer sleep messages.
The Lullaby Trust originally formed as The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID) in 1971.
Following the death of baby Martin Charles de Selincourt in 1969, the organisation was founded by Martin’s grandmother Nancy Hunter-Gray. She was unable to accept the sudden, inexplicable death of her healthy grandson and gave £200 to hold a two-day conference at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge in 1970. As FSID, they worked to reduce the number of sudden infant deaths, in much the same way as they do today.
Every year 230 babies still die of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). We don’t know what causes SIDS, often known as cot death, but what we do know is that there are simple steps parents can take to reduce the risk of it happening.
Halo aim to make sure all parents receive up to date and scientifically-proven advice on how they can keep their baby as safe as possible. They also train and provide information to healthcare professionals who support new families, to make sure parents receive consistent advice and are equipped with the knowledge to sleep their baby more safely.
The Lullaby Trust also helps families who experience the sudden loss of a baby, providing emotional and practical support. They work to ensure that families are fully supported through this devastating experience.
Their safer sleep advice gives steps for how parents can sleep their baby to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Things parents can do:
- Always place your baby on their back to sleep
- Keep your baby smoke free during pregnancy and after birth
- Place your baby to sleep in a separate cot or Moses basket in the same room as you for the first 6 months
- Breastfeed your baby
- Use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress in good condition
Things to avoid:
- Never sleep on a sofa or in an armchair with your baby
- Don’t sleep in the same bed as your baby if you smoke, drink or take drugs or are extremely tired, if your baby was born prematurely or was of low birth-weight
- Avoid letting your baby get too hot
- Don’t cover your baby’s face or head while sleeping or use loose bedding
Every year in March the Lullaby Trust hold their Safer Sleep Week campaign, where we aim to reach as many families as possible with our life-saving safer sleep advice. Health professionals and parents across the UK take part in a Safer Sleep Week campaign and it is an effective way to raise awareness of SIDS and equip parents with information on how they can reduce the risk.
Each year the Lullaby Trust train thousands of health professionals to support parents with sleeping their baby safely. They campaign tirelessly to raise awareness of SIDS and ensure our life saving advice reaches all parents.
They have developed new resources for parents and health professionals with Public Health England, Unicef UK Baby Friendly Initiative and Basis and will continue to promote their new messages and resources to ensure all professionals are clear on safer sleep advice.
The Lullaby Trust’s young parent project Little Lullaby provides advice and support to young mums and dads delivered through their peers. Little Lullaby provides a community to reduce the isolation often experienced by young parents. These young parents have produced hundreds of blogs and videos, sharing their experiences and advice and take part in takeovers of the Lullaby Trust's social media channels.
