The Liewood Story

You may have heard the name, but what makes Liewood loved by so many?

Created in Copenhagen by Anne Marie lie Nielsen in the summer of 2015, the aim behind Liewood was to produce uniquely designed baby and children’s products with an uncompromising and ethical approach to manufacturing. The DNA of Liewood was made up of simple aesthetics, functionality but most importantly, using original workmanship and with the finest materials.

Since then, the brand has come on leaps and bounds, crafting beautiful products designed to suit the lifestyles of every modern family. Liewood have continued to fulfil their mission and keep caring for the environment at the forefront of their minds, and right from drawing table to store shelf.

Demanding quality

With parents wanting the best for their little one, the quality of products for babies and children are under a closer microscope. We love that Liewood demands the best quality in all areas of operations and right from the get-go, they use the best possible materials which have passed strict quality control. Their commitment to sourcing organic materials and using sustainable ingredients throughout collections are one of the many successes to its popularity with parents.

Many products from the Liewood collection are made with a few key materials such 100% organic GOTS cotton (Global Organic Textile Standard), 100% silicone and PLA, stainless steel and more. However, for many of us we may not fully understand why these quality materials are better for baby and the planet.  To discover what key materials can be found and where in the collection you can find them, we’ve brought you some of our favourite products, new in from Liewood…

1. Silicone

Liewood often use 100% silicone composition which not only has amazing non-toxic properties but is sourced from a natural material. “What is silicone actually made of” you ask? Well, although silicone is a synthetic material after the manufacturing process, it is derived from silica sand.

Throughout the production process of silicone, it needs hydrocarbons to make it flexible and durable which is why it often resembles a plastic or rubber-like fibre in texture. However, silicone boasts better environmental qualities, as unlike plastics, it won’t break down into smaller pieces and release micro-plastics. Silicone has a long product life cycle which is a positive for our conscious shoppers because they make the best ‘reusables’, just like our Liewood’s Malik Mini Ice Pops in Multi Mix.

These ice pop moulds make for the perfect mealtime snack accessory and are made from 100% silicone. The malleable property of silicone is ideal for small hands to squeeze out all their delicious ice pops. Plus, as silicone is free from harmful chemicals such as phthalates and reacts well under unstable temperature, they are ideal for preserving food, either in the freezer or enjoying on a hot, sunny day.

2. Organic GOTS cotton

Another fabulous material you’ll find in Liewood’s woven and knitted collection is 100% certified (GOTS) cotton. GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard, which is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres - that was a mouthful! The difference between organic (GOTS) cotton and ordinary cotton is that organic is grown without the use of pesticides or toxic chemicals, which is known to help support soil fertility and increase biodiversity.

For little ones and those with sensitive skin, organic cotton is much kinder to skin as it hasn’t been processed with any harsh chemicals. That’s why we love the Liewood Robert Doll in Mr Bear, as he’s the perfect cuddle companion! Made from 100% organic cotton shell, this classic little bear is ideal for imaginary play or naptime snuggles, all thanks to it super-soft outer.

3. PLA

You’ll need 100% focus on this one because the process of making PLA is just as perplexing as the word… so, PLA (also known as polylactic acid, or polyactide) is extracted from raw materials such as corn. The starch found in these materials are converted into dextrose by adding enzymes. This is then fermented by microorganisms into lactic acid by polylactide that resemble the properties of polymers – still with us?

Well, as complex as this sounds, PLA is still produced from renewable raw materials, and is even biodegradable.  PLA can break down into natural elements in commercial compost facilities and because they are biologically based, PLA plastics do not produce toxic fumes.

The Liewood Joana Baby Plate Set in Mr Bear is the adorable mealtime product for little ones at weaning age and older. The silky-smooth feel of natural PLA makes it soft to the touch, perfect for little fingers to grab a tasty treat!

4. Stainless steel

Stainless steel is a metal formed when the raw materials of nickel, iron ore, chromium, silicon, molybdenum, and others, are melted together.  Not many know that the stainless steel industry has proven to be extremely environmentally friendly as it uses primary energy sparingly, saves non-renewable sources and limits waste.

Stainless steel's strength and low maintenance make it the ideal material for a wide range of uses and with corrosion-resisting properties, it’s no surprise why Liewood often use this material in many of their structured liquid containers.

The Liewood Jansa Thermo Cup in Whale Blue is the ultimate convenient travel cup, keeping liquids hot and cold for up to 24hrs. The base, which is made from stainless steel is both robust and insulating, perfect for on-the-go adventures at the playground or for a quick recharge at the local coffee shop.
