That late-night expression can feel like a small win: milk safely stored, baby settled, and one more feed prepared. But before the next session, knowing how to sterilise breast pump parts properly helps protect that hard-won milk from germs. The good news is that once you have a simple routine, it need not add much time to an already full day.
For UK families, the best approach combines careful cleaning, the sterilising method that suits your routine, and the instructions supplied with your particular pump. Materials vary between brands, especially for small valves, membranes and silicone components, so the pump manufacturer’s guidance should always lead the way.
Cleaning and sterilising are not the same thing
Cleaning removes visible milk residue and grease. Sterilising reduces harmful germs after cleaning. One cannot replace the other: a steriliser will not properly clean milk from a valve or bottle connector, while washing alone does not make equipment sterile.
Wash your hands first, then take apart every piece that has come into contact with milk. This usually includes the breast shield, connector, valve, membrane, bottle and lid. Cold-water sterilising

The solution must be mixed to the stated dilution and the items need to remain fully submerged for the required time. A floating bottle or breast shield is not fully sterilised. Use a clean weight or the system’s basket to keep every part beneath the liquid, and replace the solution according to the product instructions.
Some parents notice a faint scent after cold-water sterilising. This is usually reduced by following the instructions precisely and letting excess solution drain away. Do not rinse sterilised parts under the tap afterwards, as this can reintroduce germs.
Boiling water
