A bottle left on the kitchen side after a 3am feed can feel like a very small problem - until the next feed is due. To clean silicone baby bottles properly, it helps to have a simple routine that reaches every part without turning bottle washing into another lengthy parenting task.

Silicone bottles are loved for their soft, modern feel, durability and often lighter footprint than repeatedly replacing worn feeding essentials. But like any bottle, they need careful cleaning after every feed. Milk residue can settle in the teat, collar, vent and threads, while a faint smell can develop if bottles are left standing for too long. The good news is that silicone is straightforward to care for when you clean, inspect and sterilise each component as a regular part of your feeding routine.

How to clean silicone baby bottles after every feed

Start by taking the bottle fully apart. Separate the bottle body, teat, collar, cap, vent or anti-colic insert, and any additional seals. It is tempting to wash a bottle assembled, especially when time is short, but residue can remain in the small areas where components meet.

Rinse each piece as soon as you can after feeding. This stops milk from drying onto the silicone and makes the full wash easier later. Then wash the components in hot, soapy water using a clean bottle brush reserved for feeding equipment. A brush with soft bristles is ideal for reaching the base and inside walls without scuffing the material.

Give the teat particular attention. Gently turn it inside out only if the manufacturer allows this, and use a small teat brush or clean your fingers to remove milk film around the opening and underside. Do not force a brush through the hole, as this can damage or enlarge it, affecting the flow rate.

Rinse everything thoroughly under clean running water. Place the parts on a clean drying rack or freshly washed tea towel and allow them to air-dry completely. Avoid drying the inside with a cloth, which can transfer lint or bacteria back onto the bottle.

Sterilising silicone bottles safely

Cleaning removes milk and visible residue. Sterilising is a separate step that reduces germs, so both matter for young babies. Follow current NHS guidance and the instructions supplied with your particular bottle, especially as the recommended method and age for sterilising can vary.

Many silicone baby bottles are suitable for steam sterilisers, microwave sterilisers, cold-water sterilising solutions and boiling, but this is not universal. The bottle’s teat, valve and collar may also have different care instructions from the bottle body. Check before assuming every component can go into the same steriliser cycle.

If boiling is approved, ensure every piece is fully submerged and not pressed against the base or sides of the pan for prolonged periods. Allow the water to cool before removing components with clean tongs. For steam or microwave sterilising, arrange the parts so steam can circulate freely and follow the appliance’s water levels and timings precisely.

Cold-water sterilising can be particularly useful for families who want a ready-to-use solution without waiting for bottles to cool. Use the correct dilution and contact time, then handle the sterilised components with clean hands. Whether you choose steam, boiling or a solution often comes down to your kitchen set-up and feeding pattern rather than one method being better for every household.

Can silicone bottles go in the dishwasher?

Some can, but always check the product guidance first. Silicone often performs well on the top rack of a dishwasher, away from the heating element. Separate all parts before loading so water can reach the inside of the bottle and smaller pieces do not trap residue.

A dishwasher can be a practical option after a busy day, although it should not replace sterilising where this is advised. It is also worth remembering that strongly fragranced dishwasher tablets or rinse aids can leave a scent behind, particularly on soft silicone parts. If you notice this, switch to a fragrance-free option intended for baby feeding equipment, or return to hand washing for those pieces.

Removing milk film and lingering smells

A clean bottle should not feel greasy, cloudy or noticeably scented once dry. If it does, it usually needs a more thorough wash rather than replacing immediately. Take the bottle apart again, wash every component in hot, soapy water and pay close attention to the threads, teat base and any valves.

Silicone is non-porous, but a thin film of milk fat, detergent or fragranced products can cling to its surface and create the impression that the material has absorbed a smell. Letting bottles sit with leftover milk inside can make this more likely. A prompt rinse after feeds is one of the easiest ways to prevent it.

For occasional deeper cleaning, use only a method approved by the bottle manufacturer. Some brands permit a short soak in warm water with a mild, fragrance-free washing-up liquid, followed by very thorough rinsing and sterilising. Avoid abrasive scourers, harsh cleaning powders and strongly perfumed products. They can damage the finish, leave residue or make a bottle less pleasant to use.

Do not use a bottle if you cannot remove residue, if it remains sticky after washing, or if the smell persists despite following the manufacturer’s cleaning advice. It may be time to replace the affected component.

The small parts that are easiest to miss

Most bottle-cleaning issues happen in the details, not the bottle itself. Milk can collect beneath the screw ring, around the teat’s inner rim and inside an anti-colic vent. If your bottle has a valve or straw-style part, inspect it in good light after every wash.

Before reassembling, check that the teat opening is clear and that there are no tears, thinning areas, cracks or tacky patches. Silicone is durable, but teats are working parts that experience repeated pulling, heat and sterilising. Replace them at the first sign of wear and follow the brand’s recommended age or flow-stage guidance.

It is also sensible to rotate through enough bottles for your usual feeding day. This gives washed bottles time to dry fully and prevents the pressure to reuse one that has only had a quick rinse. For combination-feeding families, a small, well-organised bottle station can make the routine feel calmer: clean brushes, a drying rack, steriliser and spare teats all in one easy-to-reach place.

Storage matters as much as washing

Once bottles are dry and sterilised, store them assembled loosely or with a clean cap protecting the teat, depending on the manufacturer’s guidance. Keep them in a clean, dry cupboard rather than sealed while damp, as trapped moisture can create unwanted odours.

For feeds away from home, carry clean empty bottles separately from used ones. As soon as you are back, empty and rinse any used bottle before placing it with the rest of the washing. A compact wet bag or lidded container can be useful for keeping feeding items separate in a changing bag, but it should be emptied and washed promptly.

When should you replace a silicone bottle?

The bottle body may last well, but it should be replaced if you spot a split, persistent cloudiness, a damaged rim or any change that affects how securely the parts fit together. Teats and valves typically need replacing more often. A leaking bottle is not always worn out - it can simply mean the teat or vent has not been fitted correctly - so disassemble, clean and reassemble it before deciding.

Choosing feeding products designed to last is a considered step, but longevity only works alongside good care. Keep the routine simple, use the method recommended for your particular bottle, and inspect the small parts often. That little reset after each feed helps keep the next bottle ready, reassuring and one less thing to think about.
