Birth Preparation

Perhaps you are sailing serenely through your pregnancy and blooming in every sense of the word, or maybe you are feeling like a sack of potatoes and can’t stop throwing up.  Either way, it is a momentous time of your life at the end of which you will have a precious new life – and an inevitable new lifestyle!

Somewhere there in between however lies that unavoidable hurdle and your biggest challenge yet. Most mums look forward to the moment when they give birth with a mixture of trepidation and excitement. Your friends and relatives are probably all-too-eager to share their labour horror stories.  Our advice – don’t let them. Most pregnant women have a fairly clear idea how they want to deliver their child.  And whether you plan to lie in a bath listening to whale song, or to have maximum pain relief from the first contraction, the most important thing is that you work towards the birth that you want.

The following articles may throw up some fresh ideas, or reinforce well made plans.  Nothing is certain with new babies, but good preparation can definitely be the key to a successful birth.  And whatever your aspirations for the big day, you want your labour to be as calm and smooth as possible.

From packing your hospital bag to relaxation techniques to Doulas we hope you find the following topics useful and reassuring.

Good Luck!

Reducing the Fear Factor

In essence Hypno Birthing, teaches women that, in the absence of fear and tension, severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labour.

How does fear affect the birth?

Imagine yourself labouring in a jungle. Suppose you saw or even thought you saw a tiger lurking in the nearby shadows. What do you think would happen?  Would you have a conscious choice on what happens next? You may think you could control the situation, but your body would already have made the decision.

Hospital bag

Most suggest packing your hospital bag well in advance, up to 6 weeks before you due date. This may seem a little over zealous to some, especially as hours of early contractions will probably be spent in your own home. But take heed, things may take you by surprise and just imagine what will be packed if left to male devices.

Here is our list of suggested contents.

What are the benefits of Natal Hypnotherapy and how does it work?

Natal Hypnotherapy uses the natural state of hypnosis, deep relaxation and the power of suggestion to enhance your pregnancy and birth experience. Using hypnosis, you tap into the subconscious (the part of your mind that is responsible for all your bodily functions including your heart rate, hormone production and elimination system, as well as the part which stores your emotions, fears and anxiety) to deal with, and overcome fear and anxiety associated with pregnancy and labour, and to increase self confidence and trust in your bodies natural ability to give birth. Using and applying hypnosis techniques can therefore greatly reduce, if not eliminate the fear and tension which leads to severe pain during the birthing process

The subconscious mind does not know the difference between reality and imagination (ever had deja vue or a dream that felt as if it was real?). Therefore through Hypnosis (similar to guided visualisation) you have the opportunity to "experience" your perfect birth over and over again in your mind. In this way, once the actual birth begins, your body is familiar and comfortable with the rehearsed responses and so reacts accordingly. During the birth you remain relaxed, involved and in control, being conversant and aware of the experience. You will be aware of your body's contractions and will flow through the sensations using deep relaxation, breathing and your natural ability to tap into your bodies own pain killers (endorphins).

Being able to enjoy the experience in a calm and relaxed way leaves no room for tension and fear which are the main causes of pain.
